Proposal for the collection of rubbish in the Old Town of Corfu!

Proposals for Cambielo

1. A door to door system for the collection of rubbish.

2. Two dustman equipped with broom, pan and dust trolley, will begin to collect rubbish bags left by the residents at their entrances. The route will be predetermined and agreed by the Municipal of Corfu and the residents. The routes should be completed within the set time.
example: roads A,B,C and D together with side roads their residents should take out and leave their refuse at their entrances at specific times between 08:00 - 09:00 am, or at a time agreed with the Municipal of Corfu. One dustman to each side of the road will undertake the collection of the bags on their side of the road. As they fill their trolleys they will unload at regular intervals at predetermined refuse drops that will be posted around the Old Town perimeter. This will also avoid carrying heavy weight.

Residents Responsibilities

a. To be punctual regarding the predetermined time for refuse collection.

b. Refuse to be deposited in strong bags to avoid refuse spilling on to the road and pathways. Without holes to avoid bad odour especially in the summer months.

c. If the resident does not manage to get their refuse out on time they must not leave it in the road. They should keep it inside until the next collection or take it themselves to their nearest refuse drop.

Municipal of Corfu Responsibilities

a. To be consistent in their times and routes.

b. To make residents aware of the scheme.

3. The refuse collected will be sorted and the relevant parts recycled. (later we will look at the produce of compost from refuse).

4. There will be separate collection days for recycled waste and general waste.

5. Residents of high rise flats should create a team to collect their rubbish and help the residents that are not physically able.

example: Residents leaving very early for work on the day of collection and cannot take out their rubbish at the required time should leave their rubbish outside their door. Their good neighbour will then take the rubbish as they pass with their own and put it outside the entrance of the building. This is very important as there are many cases of old age residents that cannot carry and drop their refuse bags out of the window on to the ground outside, this has undesired effects. In these cases they should be informed to leave their refuse bags outside their door and a good neighbour will take it out for them.

6. Of great importance is to remove all large wheelie bins from the cantounia. They are always neglected, overfilled, dirty, attract rats, give out awful odour and become centres of health hazards. We propose at selected sites in all neighbourhoods there should be placed larger bins or small containers. Even better to be placed underground and have crushing facilities so that they can fit more refuse and not need emptying everyday which saves resources and helps with traffic congestion and noise, this will also rid the OLd Town of unsightly views and smells especially in tourist season.

7. Small and attractive in a style that suits the Old Town litter bins to be placed in many of the cantounia. These will be emptied everyday by the dustmen on duty as they collect the larger refuse from the residents.

8. A telephone number to be provided by the Municipal of Corfu for the collection of larger items such as Fridges, washing machines, bed mattresses, etc, etc. This will avoid these items being dumped on the streets as they now are.

9. Another problem is that we have dumping of hardcore from house renovation. It should be made clear that the builder will be responsible for their hardcore and will have to dispose of it at sites stipulated by the Municipal of Corfu.

10. We understand that the Municipal Police are stretched beyond their resources but we request that at least once a week they patrol neighbourhoods randomly to enforce the law on litter. They will take note and report names, time and place of such persons that dump rubbish. This will then be on file and if they are caught a second time fines will be enforced.

All the above needs to be discussed between the Municipal of Corfu, the residents and shop owners of Corfu. All parties need to have an understanding and come to agreement in order to solve the problem.

If we want our Island and Old Town which is part of  UNESCO to be a clean place for our residents and our tourists that will spread the good word we need to work together to change the situation of  today.
With all the above said it is a proposal that can be added to or amended for better or greater result which will be decided by the residents, shop owners and the Municipal of Corfu.

 Thank you for your time.

Voluntary collection of plastic caps from water and soft drink bottles!

In difficult times, there are many that would like to help the less fortunate but do not have the economic means. Fortunately there are other ways that offer results!

In all of Greece normal citizens can help by collecting plastic bottle caps. They are then given to specific bottle or recycling companies whom in turn contribute to the purchase of wheel chairs and disabled equipment that is very much needed by people that can otherwise not afford them.

One such example was made by the Disabled Association of Pellas in conjunction with a large recycling company in Macedonia that would like to remain anonymous. The company received the vast amount of plastic caps and in return gave funding to purchase wheelchairs for the disabled.

This effort continues in Corfu, as we too would like to help our needed! We would like to stress that the support from our citizens is of great importance and very needed. The cost of 1 wheelchair is 1000 kilos of plastic caps (1 kilo is 540 caps approximately) Electronic wheelchairs cost more. Until now the association has managed to collect 3.200.000 plastic caps which resulted to 6 wheelchairs!

The first three were donated to the Papageorgiou Hospital of Thessaloniki where  members of  its volunteer group with kidney problems received them. One went to a child on Velo Corinthias. In the meantime the association of Giannitsa received 2. Very soon there will be another two that will be donated to two disabled children in Fthiotida.

We talk with the association and gave them the news that we too have managed to collect with the help of our members and friends of our group more than 6000 plastic caps. We will send them soon but we still need much much more.

For this reason we ask that you all try to help by collecting plastic bottle caps and hand them in to us. Ask friends to help and spread the word, children to their schools, sports clubs, hotels, shops and public services. We can all help!
The collection in Corfu is being organised by the Corfiot Innitiative NGO. We will collect them, store them and weigh them before we send them to the association in Pellas.

Common everybody! Rather than throw them away where they will end up on our beaches, throw them where they will help somebody!

New action " Support to New Families"

The Corfiot Initiative NGO has already begun its latest volunteer action " Support to New Families".

We are all going through difficult times, the problems many that even the summer cannot hide. Winter will soon be here and for many will prove to be of the most difficult. The only thing we can do is offer our support to all that may need us.

There are many new couples that are so economically challenged they cannot even think of having children. The problem is widespread in our community and we as a volunteer group made a decision to offer what help we can to lighten some of the costs that accompany the good news of a new family member!

We therefore ask for help from all of us, not in the form of money but in the form of unwanted childrens items. All of us who are parents or have friends with children that have grown may have a collection of childrens items that are no longer needed. Such items as baby chairs, prams, car seats, baby baskets, blankets, cots, sterilisers, bottles, clothes, toys and whatever else is in good condition and no longer needed!

Also whoever may need items such as those listed above should contact us, we will then create an individual list of need for each family so we may all help each other!

Our course of action will be as follows:

1) We will first begin with a list of all who wish to donate and items donated. A list will also be formed of families in need and what items they need.

2) The second stage will be the collection of the donated items.

3) The third and final stage will be to deliver the items to the families in need. Delivery will be made by our volunteers and members of the Corfiot Initiative NGO.

We hope for your support and will very much appreciate from all that may have the goodwill to join us in this volunteer action.

ACTIONS

The Corfiot Initiative NGO was formed in Corfu on March 2011.  It is a non profit organization  founded by caring members of the public sensitive to the needs of  the island and its people by volunteering their time to the cause of Corfu. Although the current economic crisis is proving to be one of the most difficult times in Greece's modern history the members of  The Corfiot Initiative NGO have completed twenty volunteer actions with great success and continue to:

1) Perform volunteer actions that have an environmental character to protect, care and help keep clean the environment such as the cleaning of beaches, forests, historical monuments and recycling as well as the education of children in schools in how to recycle and help the environment.

2) Perform volunteer actions that have a cultural character in the preserving of and saving of the islands' cultural inheritance and local history such as the historic old town of Corfu which is listed by UNESCO.
